wow, nice rant (against leopard and vista).
Well, to be fair, the writer Oliver Rist, is not exactly a
professional technology analyst. Tossing out what amounts to
blind rage without adequate facts to back him up while dumping
out insincere mockery like 'Leoptard' in the first sentence of
the article destroys his credibility.
You also have to note that his entire perspective on Macintosh
and Mac OS X is severely limited. He only bought is first Mac
THIS YEAR. That officially makes him a NEWBIE. His perception of
Mac OS X Tiger is that it simply works, period. Meanwhile, the
rest of us who have been using Macs for many years (I started in
1991) know that Tiger was C R A P when it was released with loads
of problems. In fact (!!!) Tiger had MORE problems than Leopard
currently has! Every single person I have talked to about this
issue has pointed out this fact. I have to agree. For a '1.0'
version of an OS, Leopard is doing remarkably well. So sorry
Oliver.
Just for fun I am going to slag Oliver on his stoopid points, but
I note some good points at the bottom:
1) Oliver has no perspective on hardware quality and cost:
I had to be talked, wined, dined, and peer-pressured into buying my first
MacBook Pro this past January. But once I plunked down the bucks for the
slightly less hardware oomph per dollar than I'm used to...
What on Earth is he talking about? If Oliver had actually
bothered to do his homework, as a good professional would do, he
would have found that EVERY study of cost performance of
computers proves that Macintosh computers COST LESS than any
comparably equipped Windows box. Just ask and I will bury you
with data on the subject to prove my point.
And what did he buy anyway? A Mac Mini? And he's complaining
about 'oomph'? Go get a Mac Pro of you want 'oomph'. Meanwhile I
pound away at my MacBook from last November and absolutely love
my 'oomph'. I bought a dedicated server to do the OTHER 'oomph'
stuff.
2) Oliver sez:
Here's the point, in case any Apple reps missed it: Microsoft has delivered
clear improvements in stability over time?a feat you'd think Apple might want
to emulate.
Huh? Apple already accomplished it and you already admitted it in
your article Oliver. You said:
Tiger just works. End of story
So now you are expecting ANYONE to come out with a stable '1.0'
operating system. It has NEVER happened! We are STILL in THE
STONE AGE OF COMPUTING! Wake up!
3) Oliver sez:
Vista Similarity 1: Wait for a Service Pack?Perpetually
No. Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard was updated to 10.5.1 LAST WEEK bozo!
That means the first 'Service Pack' for Leopard was released less
than ONE MONTH after the OS was released. I love Apple.
So when is Vista's first 'Service Pack' coming out? Hello? The OS
is nearly a year old now! SO WHEN IS THE FIRST UPDATE?! I hate
Microsoft.
4) Oliver sez:
Vista Similarity 2: Needless Graphics Glitz
First let me point out that Vista is Microsoft's first, true
attempt to get away from the square BOX approach to everything.
It is the first version of Windows you can stand looking at
without thinking you're still stuck in the 20th century.
And is Oliver trying to say that stuff like transparency is new
in Leopard? Again his newbie-ness is showing. Transparency was in
Mac OS X 10.0.0, dopey. It took Microsoft 7 (SEVEN) years to
catch up with basic Mac OS X Aqua interface elements. Who is the
slow poke here? And why is Oliver the only reviewer I have ever
read who found any part of Aqua not beautiful? But to each his
own taste, in this case bad taste.
5) Oliver just plain needs an enema. He must have had dinner over
at Dvorak's house the night and caught some grumpiness intestinal
bug before he wrote this POS of an article. He is a grouch who
thinks his dim and ignorant opinions amount to useful comments.
They do not.
BUT!
OK. What I LIKED about this daft article:
A) Yeah, I get tired of pointless user interface 'Fixes' as well,
but at least Mac OS X gives you a pile of choices, OR the
developer community provides them for you, typically for FREE.
I've posted a thread previously with a list of such freeware for
Leopard.
B) Oliver's points on networking are very good. Apple is so weird
and lazy about cross platform networking sometimes. They need a
swift kick in the head.
C) Oliver sez:
I'm writing this on an XP workstation right now because my Mac is busy
reinstalling Tiger. Leopard can keep its glitzy crash-prone spots. I'll stick
with the OS that really "just works"?for now.
I think that's a GREAT idea! I am running in Tiger and intend to
do all my main computing in it for several months because I know
full well that Leopard is going to require 'service packs' for
several months until Apple perfect the thing and the '1.0' effect
is stripped away.
I run ALL my computers with multiple volumes on my boot drives.
This gives me a choice of where to boot from. I have one volume
for WORK; I have another volume for REPAIR of the boot volume.
Guess where Leopard gets installed: On my SECOND volume, not my
main boot volume. There I can play with it and I can still run
all my repair apps to clean up my boot volume when I want to. (I
also like to have a third volume that I designate for file
storage).
I'll have to remember this author's name so I can keep in mind
that HE SUCKS (mostly).
;-)
Share and Enjoy,
