I recall seeing just this thing for mini CD's, fifteen years ago.

My vague recollection from ~15 years ago is that all CD readers were
still tray loaders (which had indents for the smaller disks).
Meantime, my CD burner required the use of a "jewel box" sized tray
that you had to put the (full sized) CD inside of, then inserted into
the drive.

Really? I know for a fact that most car audio cd players in 1992 were
slot load.

My apologies - I was thinking specifically of portable computers only,
and not of automotive audio systems. In any event, were these slot-
loaders compatible with the 80mm "CD Singles" of the day, and if so,
how so?

They weren't. I had one of those adapters to go with my 3" CDs in the
late 80's. They specifically said not to use them in any slot loading
CD player because they couldn't take the mechanical stress of being
loaded in horizontally. They loosely clipped on the outside of the 3"
CD and it didn't take much to pop it out. Those would have been a
disaster in a slot loader.

Honestly there was rarely any problem with 3" CDs in a tray loader -
even without the 3" indent. I could center it close enough and the
machine would take it. If was off center too much it would simply
stop like any other CD that wasn't properly loaded.
