like appletv doesn't do anything any old mac can't do when properly

I'm not exactly a big fan of the AppleTV...that's why I have a Mac
Mini.
it also brings many things avaialble on managed networks to home
networks- some more useful than others, depending on your network,
your current habits, and how many computers you have.
some things that may get less use include remote diagnostics of
machines on your network and remote desktop access. automatic, smart,
incremental backups are nice. access to files and pcs from the
internet is cool (including providing an address for your box through
windows live (for free (or included if you prefer))). it streams to
other pcs and xbox 360s. all supposedly super simple to configure and
use.
This goes back to the any old PC argument. The only feature that is
seriously lacking on your standard Mac is a built in easy to use
incremental backup solution -- should be fixed in about a month, and
you can't stream directly to the AppleTV from the Airport Extreme --
but you can sync up to 160GB of media without having to worry about
streaming.
it's basically a combo of a nas device, media server, and remote
access software. and it has all the media center functionality.
starting ~$600 for a 500GB computer. not bad. certainly a better
value (hardware wise- but i would argue, for this application,
software wise as well (based on what we know about the software (but
in think media center is pretty sweet to begin with))) than appletv.
The AppleTV is not even in the same category...the Apple Airport
Extreme Base station is, you can connect hard drives and printers and
share them wirelessly (802.11n) or over gigabit ethernet. Now put
the Apple base station together with this....
http://reviews.cnet.com/hard-drives/drobo/4505-3186_7-32470303.html
then you have a nice backup solution.
But, every Windows PC and Mac comes with a remote access solution
already.
WHS is a good product. It is a a fairly straightforward setup. I think that it will give a lot of server value for the "typical" multi-pc home.
I am eager to see what HP and others do with the product, as I think it has a lot of potential.
Not a product that I would use, but it does provide a lot of functionality for what I would think a typical family needs a server for.
I think that we should encourage cost effective and easy to use technology. Competition is good. I would like to see an Apple product in this space.
