Exactly. OEMs have no choice - load Windows or they'll lose those deep
discounts. Lose those deep discounts and their business plan is in
shreds.

Why do they want to keep a "deep discount" on what you tell us they
can't sell?

Because they know that sometime soon, possibly even early next year,
Vista will be the only Windows OS.

You mean only you Maccies know that Dell got MS to extend the time on
XP? Why don't the PC OEMs know this?

"Large PC manufacturers were slated to have to stop selling XP after
January 31. However, they have successfully lobbied Microsoft to allow
them to continue selling PCs with all flavors of Windows XP preloaded
until June 30."

I wonder how they managed to persuade MS to extend the lifetime of XP?
Perhaps it's got something to do with poor Vista sales, which confirms
that the "60 million sales" rubbish is just that - contract supplied
copies that are sitting ininventory somewhere.

Besides, I'm sure the OEMs have sold *some* Vista machines, just nothing
like as many as you and Microsoft would like us to believe.

How do you know how many they did or didn't sell?

Because if Vista was flying off the shelves there would be no demand for
XP.

I don't suppose anyone running Windows
2003 Server will give two hoots about style. OTOH, I, as an end user,
care deeply about style.

This will be a shock to you, but not everybody accepts "style" to be
whatever they shovel out of Cupertino.

True, but it certainly ain't what they shovel out of Redmond.

Windows is a business OS, so there's little mileage for Microsoft in
making Windows anything other than functional.

but they do have a first rate legal team.

What's your point?

Microsoft have used their first rate legal team to keep just the right
side of the law.

What exactly is that supposed to mean?

It means precisely what it means, and the meaning is clear enough.
