Mea Culpa! I misread it. It does, indeed, say 1920 X 1200, in which
case it certainly does support 1080i through the DVI. IOW, our
friend "None" is off-base here, even more than I suspected. I
haven't seen a Mini connected to an HDTV and used as a video
bridge, so I can't really imagine what he's complaining about. I
would have thought that 1080 X 1920 was 1080 X 1920, period! The
only thing that would make it look bad is over compression and/or
low bit-rate and that's not the Mini's fault.

it might "support" it but the refresh rate of shared video is painful
on "the big screen".

the mini is meant for static computer images, not "moving video". the
appletv runs circles around the mini if you actually want to "watch"
anything that requires action on a HDTV.

but, the ignorant won't understand that.

That's complete and utter nonsense. As far as video hardware goes, a
Mac mini will happily drive a 1920x1200 display at 60Hz (progressive),
which exceeds any HDTV standard out there. The Apple TV's video hardware
maxes out at 1080i60/720p60.

What is 1080i60? By definition 1080i is 30 FPS and 720p is 60 fps.

By definition, 1080i60 is 60 *fields* per second. A quick Google search
shows "1080i60" is a far more common designation than "1080i30".

I don't get it. I thought that the "p" automatically means 60 fps and the
"i"
designates 30 fps. For instance:

720i means 720 vertical lines, at 30 fps
720p means 720 vertical lines at 60 fps

The 'p' and 'i' refer solely to whether the signal is interlaced or
progressive. They don't tell you anything about how many frames or
fields you're getting a second; that's what the successive number does.

If the context is US broadcast television, 720p is virtually always 60
frames per second and 1080i is virtually always 60 fields per second.
The latter is the same amount of data as 30 frames per second, but not
the same thing.

However, other possibilities exist and are not that uncommon. The best
format supported by the Apple TV, for instance, is 720p24. 1080p24 is a
common format for movies on HD disc formats. And PAL countries usually
broadcast 720p50 and/or 1080i50, presumably because this makes for
better results with unconverted PAL material.

Yes. Thank you (and Sandman) for straightening me out on that. It does get
confusing. In "my day" we only had to deal with Interlaced and one frame
rate, 30 fps. This variable frame rate confuses me sometimes (are we talking
fields or frames?). Anyway, thanks again, I won't make that mistake again.
