But at least you can download hi-def 1080i content to the Mini either
via the internet, Elgato, or just by hooking up your Mac Mini to a
compatible cable box that supports Firewire and using free software.

So can Apple TV. I'm sync'ing to the hi-def video Podcast "Mac Break"
right
now.
Why go through the extra trouble of syncing on the measly 40GB hard
drive
when with the Mac Mini you have the whole thing right there? And once
again
the AppleTV cannot do 1080i/p.

Most TVs can't do 1080p

Thats just not true any more.

Steve

Sure it is. Most TVs are still NTSC. Of those that are HDTV, so many are
still analog (as opposed to HDMI) and therefore 1080i maximum, that the
high-definition movie consortium has had to shelve their plans to set a
flag
on all pre-recorded high-def DVDs (both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray) to cripple
them
to only a little better than 480p through the analog outputs (PbPrY)
until
sometime in 2011 or 2012 because if they set that flag now, it would ruin
Blu-Ray and HD-DVD player sales. There just aren't enough HDTVs with
HDMI
inputs out there. The biggest selling HDTVs are plasmas and LCDs with
only
768 X 1366 (or there-abouts) with true 1080 X 1920 (and the concomitant
ability to display 1080p) costing twice as much or more. The cheaper 768
pixel, 1080i sets, were I to hazard a guess, outsell the 1080p sets by
likely as much as 10:1.

I'm sorry, George, but the fact that a TV is *capable* of displaying an
NTSC signal in no way prevents it from displaying 1080p.

It does if its NTSC ONLY, which is what I'm talking about. Lets' get our
nomenclature right here. When I talk about a set still being NTSC, I mean a
set which is capable of displaying a 525 line (vertical resolution) picture
and has only one raster frequency, 15,750 Hz. So called HDTVs are in
actuality, ATSC sets which will, of course display NTSC programming
(because
by and large that's still what 90%+ of all programming STILL IS!) as well
as
the ATSC formats.

Sorry, but that won't wash.

Such TVs won't be able to display *any* HD format.

Huh? Of course such TVs won't be able to display "any" HD format. THAT'S my
point (or at least part of it). TVs with a fixed 15,750 Hz raster can ONLY
display NTSC. They cannot do 480p, 720i, or p, 1080i or p, just NTSC.

I don't get what's so hard to understand about this. Regular NTSC-only TVs
DON'T DO HDTV! Is it a reading comprehension problem with you and Sandman? I
think I've made myself very clear on this point.
