I can understand how you might think so- the whining about
Vista has been deafening, so you might easily think the back-compat
is really dire.
Now, if this was something I only *thought*, you'd have a point.
You don't think that Vista's back-compat is really dire?
No, it's not something I merely think.
You seem to be saying it's really dire above.
I've said nowhere that Windows Vistas poor backwards compatibility is
something I only think exist.
It's actually worse. Most gamers won't touch Vista due to its poor
backwards compatibility.
Worse than really dire?
Dan, always falling back to word games when actual argument doesn't
exist.
I had heard, anyway, that the the hardcore gamers were also
concerned about losing performance with Vista, and the stability
of the Vista drivers.
Weren't you supposed to give a case where Vista is ok for gamers, and
that Vista has good backwards compatibility? :-D
it's just not as good as Microsoft has done
in the past. People are used to getting more from MS.
Actually, people are used to their games working since MS hadn't
updated their OS for six years and most games worked with XP. I'm
quite sure you're pretending that Windows XP has good game backwards
compatibility when it was released. Anyone around at the time knows
better of course.
I didn't mean to pretend that. From what I am hearing the transition
to XP was not quite as bad as the one to Vista, from a compatibility
point of view. Both are large upgrades, of course, but Vista is
*deliberately* incompatible in some cases, in the name of security.
Yes, those old games sure are insecure! Or how was it - aborting cut
scenes is a huge security hole, right? :-D
OTOH, I have to admit that my own personal experience is that
Vista is more compatible with XP than XP was with WinME;
it may be that this is in fact true in general, and it is I who has been
deafened by the whining. :D
Well; i won't substitute reality with your "personal experience"
anytime soon :-D
I think you are mistaken. Vista's back-compat isn't as bad
as all that.
Coming from the groups largest Windows apologist, I'm sure you
understand why I don't disregard my personal experience and that of
millions of gamers just like that. :-D
I'm the groups largest Windows apologist? I'm flattered! :D
I can't think of anyone so eager to ignore Windows flaws and pretend
they don't exist and in the same time invent a handful of OSX flaws
that doesn't exist.
David Corn was pretty good at that, but he was also very knowledgable
about Windows, so he did it better.
Yeah, XP had poor backwards compatibility too when it was released.
par for the course with MS.
I guess, then, this is all a question of nomenclature.
By "poor" you mean "much better than Apple". :D
I.e. "much worse than Apple".
DirectX 10 is a Vista feature; I know you *want* to get
it for free, but MS is under no moral obligation to give you
freebies.
Eh? Who claimed they were?
Not just you.
Not me at all, in fact. I'm just pointing out the really funs tance MS
has on this. The only way they can get gamers to touch their new
operating system is to make new features Vista-only, not to make a
good OS version.
I've seen many people whine that MS isn't
offering DirectX 10 for free, on the 'net.
I think Apple should offer ringtones for free as well, but I don't
consider it to be their "moral obligation" just because of it.
If DirectX 10 is All That, you should get Vista to have it.
And then loose backwards compatibility with a host of other games I
have.
You may have to do some tweaking to get them to run
properly, yes. It's not the end of the world.
"Tweaking", in this case, means "re-install Windows XP".
This isn't a Mac, so you can turn off pretty much everything, if you
want to maximize performance.
Given the fact that this isn't OSX, I pretty much have to turn of
things to achieve performance, yes.
Oh, this is priceless! I should have this one bronzed! :D
Consider yourself whipped. :P
Fair enough. It's till hilarious though. Opening it with the terminal
is the quickest way to open a GUI application in Windows... Hehe.
I didn't say anything about the "terminal".
The "run" toll executes shell commands based on the path. I totally
respect that you want to nitpick terminology instead of facing this
poor display of Windows useability.
Nitpicking isn't just a hobby, it's a way of life! :D
"Run" doesn't run shell commands; this isn't unix. It runs programs.
See what I mean?
It's not as usable as Vista search or Spotlight, yeah,
but it's not the end of the world. Would you rather use the
dog to find dxdiag? :D
I would rather have a useable file manager in Windows, actually.
It's personal, Sandman. It hates you! :D
Sounds like when you're having imaginary problems with your "Macs" :-D
I have only one, and it gives me very little trouble, since it's boxed up in
the closet.
Well, I meant actual Macs, not made up ones. :P
I didn't realize any real DX10 exclusives had existed, but then
I'm not a hardcore gamer.
If they are coming out already, that will speed the transition to
Vista.
I don't know what you are talking about now, if you're not just
talking to yourself. Who said anything about exclusive?
If it runs also on XP, then you can just run it there, and
you won't need Vista. But then you'd have nothing to whine
about. :D
If I only run it on XP, then it wouldn't be using DX10 now would it,
which is the entire point of this thread. Look, soon I won't help you
out with these basic things any more.
