No, I mean they should have learned from Apple how to make a smooth
and short transition to a modern operating system. Instead they made
their customer suffer through a long and troublesome transition. D'oh!

It's much easier to "short transition" a user base of 20 million (Apple)
than a user base of 500 million (Windows).
That doesn't make any sense. The transition (notice that's a noun, not
a verb as you used it) isn't about _time_ to get it done, as you
implied.
The argument offered was that the customer deals with a short
transition rather than a long one. That's _each_ customer, not an
aggregate that we are looking at in summary.

The above figures pulled from out of a hat, but you get the idea.

Actually, once MS had a "modern" consumer OS (XP) the transition took
about 4 years. By mid 2004 XP was dominant and 98 was dropping fast.
That's pretty fast considering the size of the user base.
Again, though -- you're looking at this from a perspective of how long
it takes a group to migrate. The question is about _each_ user, not a
majority (because the statement was about when a user could have the
benefit).

NT and 2000 were never aimed at home/consumer users.
You wouldn't say 2000 was?
It was certainly sold that way, but do you really think it wasn't even
designed for that?
