I had a similar problem with migration assistant and a G4 400Mhz tower
(first G4 tower) - the new iMac steadfastly refused to reckognise the old G4
over Firewire. Turned out the fix was a breeze though... just boot the G4
into OS 9, ad install the latest G4 firmware update off of support.apple.com
(not available through software update, and can't be installed from OS X).
Everything worked just as advertised afterwards.

My firmware was already updated - we checked that.

Amusingly enough... I and most the dual-monitor people I know, put the
second monitor on the left... no matter the relative sizes or qualities. In
my case I just don't like to have to rotate my body towards my mouse hand.

Well, then, if my guess is wrong then Apple had no way to "win" here... and
it is not that big of a deal. Thanks.

My iMac arrived yesterday... been setting it up. Some thoughts:

* My good is this machine wonderful - first iMac I have actually liked the
way it looked. It is fast (well, what new machine would not be compared to
my G4 800). Setup has been *mostly* a breeze - though one glitch I will
talk about later.

* Was able to run XP and Ubuntu on Fusion. Flawless. Absolutely wonderful
to have all three OSs I need at my finger tips. Have installed MS Office
2007, the Adobe Design Premium suite, Camtasia and more on Windows. All
run as well as can be expected on Windows. :)

* Every program I generally use - except for MS Office - is already Intel.
No real need for Rosetta *other* than office and the occasional odd program
I might run into. Still, when I do need it I am happy it is there -
excellent.

* Love the keyboard. Takes some getting used to - very, very different
than my old "chunky" Macally... but has a very solid and good feel to it.

* I need to get a USB 2.0 hub... for someone like me the 4 open ports are
not enough.

* D'oh! Silly me - what I thought was a mini-DVI to VGA adaptor was a
mini-VGA to VGA adaptor... Not a big deal - I already have the mini-DVI to
DVI cable being sent to me, but I am "stuck" with one monitor right now.

* The Migration Assistant completely failed me... my old computer would not
show up. I called Apple on this one and ended up talking to "higher ups" -
seems that there have been several reports of it 1failing when used with
the old gray G4 towers. An update will likely fix that - but too late for
me. Oh well... manual moving was not hard... though I have yet to rebuild
my iTunes playlists. Not sure how I will do that... any ideas?

* I really like the new iWork... though it is far from perfect.

* The iMac's screen is higher than than my older screens so I had to rework
my work environment a bit. Used to have my monitors on a stand I built
with some shelves - will now make some shelves on the wall next to the
hutch of my desk. Not a big deal.

* For some reason my SteerMouse settings did not transfer... the ended up
being corrupt. I had to manually reset my configs... not a big deal but
odd. I did not even try copying them over again - that might have worked
just fine.

* The machine is quiet. Sometimes hear the hard drive or, of course, the
CD drive. That's about it.

* I wish the CD / DVD drive was on the left and not the right. My second
monitor will be to the right and I need to move it a bit to get to the
drive. I bet most people with two monitors put the second one to the
right...

* Love the remote. Did not think I would care about it, but great to be
able to pause movies when I am on my stationary bike.

* The iPod that came with it is cool as well... never thought I would want
one but have been enjoying it.

* The cloth that comes with it is amazing. Silky and soft and lint free...
and matches the black of the machine. Worth the price of the machine. :)

I am sure I will have more to say as time goes by... but those are some
early "random" thoughts. Ok... back to work!

Congratulations on your purchase of a iMac. A machine that is YEARS ahead of
a Windows PC.

This machine is simply wonderful - no complaints at all with how it has
operated.
