Hey Alan, when are you going to tell us who Sun bought their OS from,
like you said they did?
I already told you: they bought it from University of California.

Depends on the release:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunos

SunOS is a version of the Unix operating system developed by Sun
Microsystems
for their workstation and server computer systems. The SunOS name is
usually
only used to refer to versions 1.0 to 4.1.4 of SunOS. These versions were
based on BSD Unix, while SunOS version 5.0 and later are based on UNIX
System
V Release 4, and are marketed under the brand name Solaris.

It's also worth noting that Bill Joy was instrumental in the creation
of BSD.

Bill Joy wrote BSD when he was at Berkeley and he took it with him
when he founded Sun. No payment was necessary, all that was required
was to maintain the copyrights, and BSD was free from the very
beginning.

Sorry, but you're wrong.

Further, SVR4 attempted to consolidate a lot of the BSD
functionality into AT&T UNIX though it was a bit of a convoluted
process. BSD was the origin of sockets, VM in UNIX and other innovations
that appeared early on. Having both branches of UNIX benefited
everybody. Competition is good.

Sun collaborated with AT&T in the creation of SVR4.

Correct.

But they changed their OS from being based on BSD to being based on SVR
with BSD functionality added.
