Why they won't go Vista and switch to Macs.
""From what I've observed, Windows Vista is the same [as XP],
but
with
prettier icons and a little prettier user interface," Frantz
says.
"At
the end of the day, our users are not going to do their work
any
differently with Vista than with Windows XP." "
and...
It will take 12 to 18 months to rewrite the VIPS client
software
to
run
on Macintosh
I bet it would take considerably less time to rewrite the
program
properly
so that it runs on Vista.
Latest News about Macintosh machines, and Frantz doesn't want
to
delay the cost savings and efficiency enhancements tied to the
migration to Apple hardware.
What cost savings? Until the application is re-written for the
Macintosh
(writing in Java is now considered writing for the Macintosh?)
he's
still
going to have to run the application in Windows. Which means all
the
support
costs of Windows are going to remain. Looks like he's adding
costs:
1. Macintosh computers cost more.
2. He has to buy Parallels.
3. He has to buy Windows.
4. He has to support OS X.
5. He has to support Parallels.
Where? Assuming there is a support cost savings (which is
questionable)
switching from Windows he's still going to be using Windows until
the
application is re-written. Therefore he's going to continue to
incur
those
costs in addition to new ones stemming from the list I provided in
my
earlier post. Surely you're not implying that Windows support costs
decrease
merely because it's run in OS X and Parallels are you?
Then he must really believe that the ongoing savings are going to be
worth it, wouldn't you say?
Who to believe: well-respected senior executive or anonymous Usenet
guy?
The answer should be obvious: Usenet guy. It's obvious this guy has no
clue
what he's talking about. And haven't we heard from the Mactards that
upper
management doesn't know any better and that's why they choose Windows?
Now
that someone is choosing a Mac they're all of a sudden informed.
Yup. He went out and got himself informed after Microsoft got him
irritated enough to wonder if there might be a better answer. In the
course of his investigations he came across companies using Macs in the
tens of thousands who had less support staff than his company did for
far fewer systems.
Perhaps (and with that I'm not conceeding it's true). But that doesn't
explain how he is going to obtain immediate savings by switching to Macs
until the applicaiton in question is re-written for them. Something I
notice
you're unwilling to answer.
Whoever said he was going to obtain immediate savings?
Apparently he does. As reported in the original message (which you obviously
didn't read):
"It will take 12 to 18 months to rewrite the VIPS client software to run
on Macintosh Latest News about Macintosh machines, and Frantz doesn't
want to delay the cost savings and efficiency enhancements tied to the
migration to Apple hardware. So in the interim, AWC will continue to run
VIPS on Windows using software from Renton, Wash.-based Parallels that
lets Macs run Windows applications in a virtual environment."
So? That doesn't say that the savings are going to be immediate. It says
that any savings that are to be had from using Macs will be delayed if
he delays switching to Macs.
BTW, here's what ComputerWorld thinks of him:
So what? He's upper management. And, according to the Mactards, upper
management is clueless. At least they are when they choose Windows over
OS
X.
Nope. Even ignoring your silly nickname, all anyone ever claimed was
*most* of them are clueless.
LOL!
I bet you think so!
I win!
