OK, heres the situation, I have about 40 sales reps that I have to
support laptops for, among other things. I try to buy the same types
of laptops in any given stretch of time, so down the road, as they
fall down stairs, get dropped into fryers, ect... I start to
accumulate spare parts. I end up with a good assortment of batteries,
hard disk, screens, keyboards... you get it.
I have been buying the cheapest, decent ones I can get my hands on
while trying to keep them compatible. Lately I have been buying Acer
Travelmates from Best Buy for Business, around $500.00 gets a
reasonable machine that runs our software fine, and they seem durable,
after about 20 or so over the last year (As the Dells were dying), I
have only had to send one Acer in for warranty repair for a defective
hard disk.
I always have one for myself, but usually end up giving it away when
somebody kills one, and so, find myself needing another laptop.
I thought I would go ahead and buy a Macbook for myself, I could
MAYBE, justify $1100.00 when perfectly good laptops are costing us
around $500.00. I was just about to get one, when I realized there is
no place to plug an aircard in???? PCMCIA nor Express??? Whaaaaaa?
Somebody tell me I am missing something here and completely missed it.
I was honestly hoping to get something a little more exiting than a
run of the mill cheapo Windows laptop. But there seem to be no
provisions for communications on the road with the exception of
802.11. I NEED to run an aircard, I frequently pull over on the side
of the road to fix server issues.
I recall EVDO making something you're looking for. Not sure though.
