I'd be interested in hearing an explanation of this. It seems
fairly obvious to me that the eventual market for devices of the
class to which Apple TV belongs constitutes everyone who owns a TV
set.

Do you believe the Internet won't be a major distribution channel
for video content in the future?

the internet will probably be a major distribution channel- through
the home computer and youtube, maybe not.

IMO, the home computer will be significant for the same reason it is
with the iPod. Managing and organizing large amounts of information
requires a UI more sophisticated than what you can fit on a portable
device -- or a device controlled with a remote from across the room.

My problem with all this, other than the need for the massively improved
infrastructure, is whether Joe Bloggs has the slightest interest in
investing in the technology and paying the fees required. Certainly a
percentage will, the vast majority couldn't care less.

TV is "free" for many people. Sky in the UK are struggling to get more
than 7-8 million customers, the churn almost matches newcomers. With
about 10 half decent Freeview DVB-T channels there's more programmes
than time to watch unless you're a confirmed couch potato.

So how do you persuade millions of people to swap their free TV and the
occasional rental DVD for a paid-for service via AppleTV or whatever?
