1. Per app volume control via the mixer courtesy of the re-worked audio
stack, as well as support for Intel's HD audio standard.
My god, what a useless feature. :)
Actually it is quite a useful feature. You can easily turn down apps
like MSN Messenger or Skype so that instant messenger dings downt blow
your ear drums out if you happen to be watching a movie with headphones
on etc.
Actually, Adium has its own volume control, and stays silent when
you're set to away. So...
Adium's not part of the OS. What about iChat?
2. superior handling of images (photos) If you want to cycle through a
folder full of images, it is easier in Windows to simply double click on
an image in the file which invokes the built in image viewer, and then a
simple mouse click or keyboard press can allow you to step through the
entire folder's contents.
Finder slideshow does this as well, of course.
The only hassle I have with Finder is the terrible right click response
time I have to endure to bring up the menu option to invoke the slideshow.
So use the action button in the window, it doesn't load any other CMM,
which are the ones that take time to load for the selected objects.
3. It can run office 2007 natively, no need for emulation
Heeeey, we were talking about good features :)
Office 2007 is the best office yet.
And totally useless to me.
Some have a use for such apps due to work and such. Until Office 2008
comes out, it has a purpose.
4. Courtesy of IE7 it can access more websites with premium content for
examplewww.willow.tv
Courtesy of IE7, it can access more malware.
Well IE7 operates in protected mode, so it is way more secure than IE6
And way less secure than any other web browser on the planet. :)
5. Windows Explorer is superior to Finder. XP's Windows Explorer was
better than Finder, and Vista's is better still with breadcrumb view.
Opinions aren't features. Explorer really and truly sucks. But that's
only my opinion.
I disagree, I find the Finder to be as frustrating as hell, but that is
just my opinion.
I.e. not a feature.
6. Enhanced memory performance courtesy of readyboost and fastfetch
And I bet at least 0.0000003% of the Vista users use this :)
All Vista users use fastfetch, unless they turn it off. You have to buy
a readyboost compatible flash memory to get Readyboost. Both do a
decent job of increasing overall system perofrmance.
7. Apps that need attention do not bounce up and down endlessly in the
dock and annoy the crap out of you.
Like?
Like any app that needs attention eeps then starts bouncing like a
madman up and down ceselessly in the dock until you give it the
attention it desires.
Can you name these apps? The number of bounces in the dock is
something the application decides, not the OS. If the app is written
to bounce until you take action, then it will do so. OSX doesn't do it
for them.
I find that very annoying. Why can't it bounce
like three times then change colour, or grey out a bit etc to let you
know it requires attention
I don't have any apps that bounce indefinately, and even if they did,
it isn't a feature of the OS:
Doesn't Software Update shove itself in your face with its dock icon?
That's a feature of the OS...
8. Support for HD DVD and/or Blue Ray movies
Windows Media Player can play HD-DVD/Bluray? That I didn't know. You
may just have stumbled upon a real example.
Well, can it? You just passed over an opportunity to showcase an
actual feature :)
9. Most versions come with a built in fully featured media center which
includes the ability to record live television etc
"most" is Home Premium and Ultimate.
Well?
10. Some nice novel security enhancements like ASLR (address space
location randomization), and kernel patch protection on the 64 bit versions
Hehe
11 DirectX 10 to enable it to support the next generation of
entertainment software.
Yeah, gaming is the only thing Windows has on Macs.
Your opinion, not mine
Indeed.
12 Support for a wide variety of online content providers courtesy of
Media Player 11
Just not the standard formats.
It could be argued that WMV and WMA is a standard format as it will work
in 85% plus OSes in use in the world today.
Monopoly power != standards. H.264 and mpeg4 are standard formats.
I thought the 9 series codecs were standardized...
13 Able to run Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0
Eh?
Oops, I meant Photoshop Elements 5
This is a feature of the OS? You sure about that?
14 It includes Shadow Copy for easy ability to retrieve previous
versions of important files
This is more or less a valid feature.
15 Includes Snipping Tool for taking snips off the desktop and
converting them to JPG for convenience.
Welcome to Mac OS X 10.0
16 One more thing with Windows Explorer, not new in Vista, but superior
to Finder is the ability to "invert selection"
Please.
It is an extremely useful feature, especially when I unRAR an archive
with lots of sub files in it. I can CTRL click on the items I want to
keep, then invert selection and send that to the trash.
And I select all and cmd-click the items I want to keep. I needed less
clicks than you. Sorry.
