I.e. removed the dog. Sure, they would still not have live search to a
live database tied in to useful parts of the operating system. They
wouldn't have smart folders (do they call them live folders in vista?)
for instance.

While the technology behind Spotlight isn't profound in any way, no
one can downplay it's role in bringing search as a usable UI for
working with files in Windows and in Linux.

Ever heard of Google Desktop? Search was the next "big thing"... sure,
Apple did a pretty good job (though far from perfect) and others have
learned from them - but do not pretend that if Apple had not introduced
Spotlight that searches would not have gotten easier and more intuitive on
other OSs.
