And, as I said, the phsyical size of the laptop is not a factor for
people with poor eyesight. The DPI is. You can have low DPI on a small
display just as on a big display.
Ah, okay: I understand now. This then basically means that whoever
it was that was that was saying "sale lost" (due to screen dimensions)
was actually expressing their need with the wrong requirement.
... For example, I run my 15" Thinkpad on 1024 x 768...
Well, some 15" laptop comes with a reoslution of 1920x1600, which
makes everything very very tiny, which could be a problem for people
with poor eyesight.
Exactly why I choose to trade-off "desktop size" for "readability".
FWIW, does this also include Firewire 800? Just wondering how
much of a real-world difference there is, to see if it is really worth
chasing.
For the general consumer, this is not a factor. For a professional,
the iMac isn't an option anyway.
Agreed, although it does assume that the pro's profession is one using
a dose of computing power. Personally, I can see an iMac as perfectly
sufficient for many "secretarial" types of jobs.
Right, but printers on Macs connect to the airport hub nowadays, so
that's not a cable you need to worry about either.
The printer hooks up wirelessly to the Airport? Probably not:
there's probably a USB running between the printer and the Airport,
which means that the cable run still exists - - merely not hooked up
directly out of the PC. While that makes the PC's desk look cleaner,
it doesn't eliminate the work of hooking up the cable, because you've
only moved it.
Overall, for those that are hung up about office appearances with
their cables, they should spend 100 crowns at the local store to buy
any one of the various cable "organizer" and/or "conduit" solutions.
Reason why is because the frequency of cable hookups is generally not
all that profound: other than gamre parties, the most frequent
application will probably be a student moving in & out of dorms, which
gives just two pairs of set-ups and tear-downs per year.
And, with the iMac, the only wire you need to have connected to the
computer is the power cable, really.
Network - airport
Mouse & Keyboard - bluetooth.
External storage - airport (unless speed is crucial).
Yes, minimization can be done, but it comes at the price of having to
recharge the keyboard and mouse, throughput performance, etc. And not
unlike the printer as a peripheral, if you want a scanner, you're
going to need some way to hook it in...
Overall, the only real need I see to really minimize cables is for
laptops that you will be moving frequently, but want to have an
external monitor, real mouse, etc, at some home office. The general
solution for that application is some sort of docking station, which
functionally makes many connections into just one. Apple hasn't
offered a dock for a laptop in a long time, and the "Duo" dock of
yesteryear was quite an unwiedly monster.
