That's all revisionist history marketing spin.

The original vision was to for a college drop-out to make a quick buck
by playing a shell game where he sold something that he didn't yet
even own.

The terms that he put on IBM when he realized how desparate they were
(because they were behind schedule) was simply more greed.

People can make all sorts of wild claims about their motivations are,
but their true motives are revealed by what they actually *do*.
