I just bought an iMac to replace my home PC.

Why? I'm perfectly happy with Windows in the office, but at home it's a
different story. After years of trying to edit digital video (family
stuff) on my home PC, I finally gave up and visited my local Apple store
to see how much easier they could make my life.

My frustration with Windows when it comes to video editing is huge. Some
time ago I bought what seemed at the time one of the better video
capture boards, to move movies from my digital video camera onto my PC.
I also bought Adobe Premiere, the famed (and excellent) video editing
software program. And I got a good Premiere book at Amazon.

But I never got the board to work smoothly. After much struggling and
tinkering, I was able to create some short videos, but the board and its
drivers kept acting up, and finally stopped working. It turns out there
were some incompatibilities between the board and XP, and no updates
were in the works. As for Premiere, I liked it but it would freeze up
and I never found out why, though I assume it was the board's fault.

A guy buys an older capture board that doesn't have XP support and was
appaerently EOL'ed before XP came out. Then he's shocked!, shocked I
tell you!, to find out out that it doesn't work very well under XP.
Then, instead of dropping $15 on a new Firewire card, he decides that
its all Window's fault

Bull... you obviously didn't read the story... if you did, you weren't
able to comprehend it. He clearly blamed the problems on the board and
no forthcoming updates

That's what he said. But if that were true the logical course would
have been to try another board and make sure it had XP support. That
he decided to abandon a several hundred dollar investment in software
for another platform shows otherwise.

(it was probably the fact that he needed a board
at all that bothered him).

Since a lot of newer camcorders allow for video transfer over USB he
may not have. The article is too skimpy on details to tell. Its
obvious that either this guy is leaving a lot out or that he doesn't
know enough to make an informed decision.
Also consider that this guy seem to not have realized that all he
needed was a Firewire board. He got a video capture board which is a
different thing.

and drops a couple of grand on a new Mac.
Do you really want to brag about this guy becoming a Maccie? At best
he serves to confirm most Maccie stereotypes.

He went to the Apple store to see if a Mac could make his life easier in
the world of digitalvideo... as Macs do video capture via FW out of the
box the big lightbulb went on.

As I said he may have been able to transfer his video via USB. He
doesn't mention what his camera is so we can't know. Also this guy's
lightbulb is pretty hard to flip on given that he installed a card
with no XP support in an XP machine and was shocked to find out that
it didn't work.
When I bought a camcorder I also spent ~$30 for a combo
Firewire/USB/IDE RAID card. It works just fine. But then again I had
enough sense to see that I got one that had XP support.
