Blog:

I just bought an iMac to replace my home PC.

Why? I'm perfectly happy with Windows in the office, but at home it's a
different story. After years of trying to edit digital video (family
stuff) on my home PC, I finally gave up and visited my local Apple store
to see how much easier they could make my life.

My frustration with Windows when it comes to video editing is huge. Some
time ago I bought what seemed at the time one of the better video
capture boards, to move movies from my digital video camera onto my PC.
I also bought Adobe Premiere, the famed (and excellent) video editing
software program. And I got a good Premiere book at Amazon.

But I never got the board to work smoothly. After much struggling and
tinkering, I was able to create some short videos, but the board and its
drivers kept acting up, and finally stopped working. It turns out there
were some incompatibilities between the board and XP, and no updates
were in the works. As for Premiere, I liked it but it would freeze up
and I never found out why, though I assume it was the board's fault.

When Slade and others claim that the Mac is just like any other Intel PC,
what they fail to realize (or admit to) is that these type problems are far,
far more common with Windows machines than with OS X machines. OS X, the
programs that ship with it, and the hardware are tested and designed by one
company - Apple... and Apple makes sure that the hardware and the software
work well together. No other PC maker can honestly claim to reach Apple's
level in this area...

Absolutely. I don't have time to wade through loads of techincal guff
and different combinations of components, all I want is a machine that
will do what I need it to do with the minimum of fuss.

I know I see problems like this often... computers sold with printers that
do not work with Vista, computers with DVD burners but drivers that do not
allow them to burn (and yet the burner is a selling point!), and on and on.
Such things are far, far less common with Macs.

At the same time, /when I fell like it/ I want to be able to scour through the
entire system without restriction to see wtf is going on in MY computer. Mac
OS and Linux are the only real options for the latter, and the former cuts out
linux. Nothing is perfect but I find it very easy to control this machine and
keep out those who want to use it for their own purposes. And I'm not just
talking about virus writers, there are many others, like advertisers and
software authors who want to access things I don't want them to. It's
relatively simple to detect and control such things on a mac.

I ran into that recently on my Mac... from, of all companies, Google. While
Google's programs have an uninstaller that works just fine, I was able to
easily find all the stuff they left on my machine and eliminate any
processes the Google desktop program had on my machine.

? It is OK to email yourself files and store them there for a few weeks
? No legislation supercedes the Constitution (unless it amends it)
? Apple's video format is not far from NTSC DVD and good enough for most
