Re: Windows Vista sales figures daunt Apple

It was disappointing. So much so that Balmer had to temper expectations. The 20 million figure is primarily from new PCs or the free upgrade coupons they provided at the end of last year. The new PCs gain them nothing since they would have had a Microsoft OS (XP) anyway.

Actually it does gain them something, since they are charging the PC manufacturers significantly more for Vista than they did for XP.

Are you sure about that? FWIW, I just ordered a notebook from my
former employer...one of the big PClone makers. Vista Home Basic (32
bit) was the basic option, Vista Home Premium(32 bit) was + $35 and
Vista Business (32 bit) was basic + $99. I'm thinking that XP Pro
was probably a good $99 premium over the Home Edition IIRC. In any
case, with the long delay for the arrival of Vista, Microsoft probably
needs higher nominal prices ( but not so high adjusted for currency
devaluation ) in order to recoup development costs. Personally, I
might like to get a copy of XP Pro for my lone multiboot box so I
can at least play some more modern games. Since Win2K is no longer
supported, XP would be OK I suppose for those purposes.

To drag this back to relevance to the Mac, I think that when
Leopard ships, a ten million ( 6 million new system sales and
4 million upgrades ) target for a year seems reasonable to me.
That would allow Apple to recoup its investment. It's easier
to track with Apple because it sells both the hardware and the
OS on the new systems. I plan to upgrade my MacBook Pro
but probably not my G5 iMac. I do, however, very much look forward
to getting my hands on the XCode 3 tools.....just not enough to pay
the ADC fees that enable early access ($500/year) for what is
essentially a hobby.
