Simon Szykman, chief information officer at NIST, was slightly irked
by some of the media reports on his agency's move, which painted the
ban as a major slap in Microsoft's face. In fact, Szykman said, this
is business as usual. Ultimately, NIST expects many of its PCs will
run Vista. ...

Q: What is your current position on Windows Vista?
Szykman: Our policy states that we're not allowing users to install or
deploy Windows Vista for the time being. We consider this to be an
interim policy to give us the time to do the adequate testing of Vista
before we deploy it. We don't expect to have any obstacles that would
prevent us from eventually deploying Vista.

Great Vista news!! They *expect* to *eventually* use Vista! :-D

MS must be celebrating like crazy right now :-D

Nothing there about them ever expecting to use Mac OS X... I wonder if
Steve Jobs is also celebrating?

Q: "Would you ever consider moving to a predominantly Linux, Mac OS or
other operating system environment?

Szykman: There's nothing in place that would prevent that from
happening. It really depends on what the business requirements are and
what people choose to use. There's no obstacle to more people using
other operating systems. People are able to use the operating systems
they choose."

He is referring to NSA's external customers who need secure OS setups
to communicate sensitive info to federal agencies. NSA does not
recommend software, it only sets federal standards.

Really now? And do you have a cite for your claim?

Sure - read the last paragraph, last sentence, very carefully.

http://www.nsa.gov/about/about00003.cfm

Executive Order 12333, dated 4 December 1981, describes the
responsibility of the National Security Agency and the Central
Security Service (NSA/CSS) in more detail. The resources of NSA/CSS
are organized for the accomplishment of two national missions:

The Information Assurance mission provides the solutions, products,
and services, and conducts defensive information operations, to
achieve information assurance for information infrastructures critical
to U.S. national security interests.

The foreign signals intelligence or SIGINT mission allows for an
effective, unified organization and control of all the foreign signals
collection and processing activities of the United States. NSA is
authorized to produce SIGINT in accordance with objectives,
requirements, and priorities established by the Director of Central
Intelligence with the advice of the National Foreign Intelligence
Board.

IAD's mission involves detecting, reporting, and responding to cyber
threats; making encryption codes to securely pass information between
systems; and embedding IA measures directly into the emerging Global
Information Grid. It includes building secure audio and video
communications equipment, making tamper protection products, and
providing trusted microelectronics solutions. It entails testing the
security of customers' systems, providing OPSEC assistance, and
evaluating commercial software and hardware against nationally set
standards, to better meet our nation's IA needs.
