The implementation of this is pretty cool. The OS was
re-installed
and

of his applications and data were migrated to the new
install.
He
had
his
MacBook up and running again without so much as having to do
anything
more
than swap the OS disks (apparently there's two DVDs). Pretty
cool.
With
Windows one would have to re-install all the applications too
(though
Windows does provide the means to repair the system).
Actually, there probably was another thing he could have done:
connect
in FireWire Target Disk mode and run a repair disc, installer
disc,
or
even replace the damaged files from the other machine.
That mode for connecting a second computer has been ENORMOUSLY
handy
for me, not least when I stored a bunch of files on DVD and
the
machine
I wanted them on didn't have one (nor were they configured to
share
files over the network). Connected my laptop in Target Disk
mode,
and I
could use its DVD drive and harddrive just as if they were
built
in.
I
could even run repair tools on the laptop, although I never
actually
had a problem.
Fast and easy.
I am surprised that Apple provides no official way to restore
missing/corrupted files. But then seeing as the resolution was
so
easy
I
have to wonder if such an option is necessary. What concerns me
is
the
fact
that an update messed up his system. I've never had that happen
on
Windows.

of me. Did you try doing that search? Now tell me SP-2 was a
flawless upgrade for everybody and that nobody's computers were hosed
by the update. There's a catch, though: you have to do it without
lying.

What the hell is that supposed to mean? I was saying that PC Guy's
implying that XP service packs install flawlessly while Mac OS X
service packs are scary was stupid. I've never had a problem
installing OS X service packs, nor have I had a problem installing NT
4/2000/XP service packs. However, others have had problems with
service packs on OS X AND Windows. What does SP-2 being older than
Service Pack 9 for Tiger have to do with anything?

starting to become one of my favorite macfish. Real fish are so much
smarter. God - I love it here.
What's great, though, is that I'm not a "macfish". I'm a Windows user
who is willing to admit Windows is not perfect. You take all the
negative stuff you put towards Mac users and exhibit the same behavior
as a Windows user. It's really quite pathetic.
Deep down - you are a macfish.
Right... that must be why I own two XP PCs upgraded to Vista and no
Macs.
