Many people have commented on the similarity between Aero
and Aqua, but I have observed then when asked for details they
often point to things like the Sidebar or Aero Glass, which
are very dissimilar.
Indeed, the only strong similarities in detail I've found so far are
search boxes, task dialogs, and those silly pulsing default buttons.
And the transparency... the general look of widgets / gadgets, the look of
the calendar program, the strong use of transparency (Apple over time has
learned to tone it down... MS will), the very names!, the search icon, the
shiny "bulbous" look, , and the renaming of several common folders to match
what Apple has had for years...
Take a look here:

Now there are some things MS did which are different... such as the ugly
glow around text... what were they thinking?
Big deal. So, is everybody crazy but me?
Perhaps not. There is something very much the same between
the two UIs, sonething deeper, more philosophical.
Aero is not very customizable. More customizable than Aqua, sure,
but not much more. There aren't any alternative color schemes or
vistual styles; you can change a few colors but not much.
Also, Aero is not implemented on XP vistual styling engine for
the most part. Controls just draw- and animate- themselves.
Apple does the same thing, and for a reason: It gives them
creative control over their OS's UI. They can then produce
a UI that impresses, and they use it as a selling point.
But Aqua is just *one* UI, just *one* vision of how the
computer should look.
MS has in the past tried not to dictate that sort of thing too
much. But they can't compete with Apple's aesthetics without
taking control, and that's what Aero does.
And that's a profound shift towards Apple's way of thinking.
Um, ok.

? The tilde in an OS X path does *not* mean "the hard drive only"
? Things which are not the same are not "identical"
? The word "ouch" is not a sure sign of agreement.
