An update on my report:

I have since read about a fix for Windows users of iTunes 7. And yes,
many have reported the same problem in various forums.

Here is a work-around:

1) Get out of iTunes
2) Open QuickTime 7.1.3 Preferences dialog, and click on "Audio" tab.
3) Under "Size", set the bit rate to anything LESS than 24bit.
4) Close QuickTime
5) Start up iTunes again. Your music should now play without
distortion. I can report that this does work, so that is probably the
problem others are reporting. They are probably all using 24bit
sound, as is normal in Windows.

Since when is 24bit sound "normal" in Windows? 16bit is normal.

Agreed - in fact, in Windows media player (10) you can set an option for
24 bit playback, but there is a warning to turn it off if the sound is
ditorted.
