News for Intel iMac Users of Microsoft Products
=============================================
I upgraded my Windows XP to Vista RC1 today.
Here's the drift:
I have an Intel iMac 17'' with 2GB memory and a 300GB SATA-II HD.
These are the programs and devices I've tried which will or won't
work:
1) Nero 7. It's a plain no-go. No way around it. You will have to
download ImgBurn 2.1.0.0 if you want to be able to burn DVDS in Vista
RC1, or (yuck!) boot into OS X to do it with Toast. The good news is
that ImgBurn is free (though I would make a contribution to the
author. Even $2 will be acceptable -- Though not absolutely necessary
to use it.)
2) The Sigmatel drivers don't work. PERIOD. When you go to Microsoft
Update, it will install (I think -- I have no way of proving it ) the
"Realtek HD Audio Codec". This will finally get sound working.
3) The iSight camera once again won't work. Looks like Apple needs to
do a little upgrading of BootCamp 1.1. COME ON, APPLE!! Get with
it!!!
4) The Microsoft Intellitype/Intellipoint 5.5 driver refuses to work,
though you will have basic usability of your Microsoft keyboards and
mice from first boot (and during installation or upgrade).
5) The Apple wireless drivers will work right off the bat. They are
included on the Vista RC1 installer disk.
6) Haven't tried the Apple keyboard. I use Microsoft keyboards.
PERIOD. Too bad the fancy Eject key on my Microsoft Wireless Comfort
Keyboard for Mac won't work in Vista or XP (it will work just fine in
OS X with the Microsoft Desktop 6.0 for Mac software installed. Its'
provided on the disk included with the desktop set).
7) Rue the day!!! _WindowBlinds won't work in Vista RC1!!!_. No way
around it. If you have an ObjectDesktop Network Subscription, you
will just have to wait. Stardock's StyleVista also won't work. It's
way old.
8) IconPackager WILL work (marginally), as well as Stardock Central
and ObjectDock Plus (except nothing shows in the Tray tab).
9) Reinstall your Epson Stylus Photo R220 (The Vista Upgrade Adviser
says it's not supported) software if you have one. Works marginally,
but at least you will be able to print (so-so).
10) The PrintShop 20 Deluxe works just fine.
11) Office 2003 works just fine.
12) Agent 4.x works just fine (look at my headers).
13) Download and install the ATI X1600 Mobility Vista RC1 driver. It
will improve video drastically.
14) Kaspersky Internet Security 6.x won't work, so uninstall it BEFORE
you do an upgrade. Haven't installed an AV package yet.
15) DON'T forget to download the RC version of the Vista Upgrade
Advisor BEFORE doing an upgrade. It will really help.
16) iTunes works (sometimes). Don't use the iTunes TaskBar ToolBar.
Won't work properly.
17) [AND MOST IMPORTANT] You will have to wait an hour or so for the
Microsoft Indexing to finish before you try to do anything meaningful.
It really screws up the operation of your OS until it is finished. It
will help to turn off all external drives (especially larger ones)
before starting the install. Don't worry, they will install just fine
once Vista is running.

Why are you running Vista or anything WIndows on the iMac? Are you a
glutton for punishment? ;)
