Funny how you tuckfards keep yapping about how Macs are so easy and how everything just works, and then when it turns out it doesn't, you get so vicious.
Nobody claims that Boot Camp, in its current state, "just works." Boot Camp is still very pre-release, and if you don't know what you're doing, you probably shouldn't mess with it. Even if you do have a smidgen of competence, you may need a quick visit to Apple's help forums to figure out some confusing idiosyncrasies, like the firmware update.
Nashy, there are two firmware updates: one for the computer's firmware, and one for the disk drive's. Apple's documentation is not very clear about this. A lot of people install the disk drive firmware update, and are stymied when told it is up to date but Boot Camp still won't install. You need to update the computer's firmware. Resetting the PRAM makes no difference, and fsck obviously has absolutely nothing to do with it whatsoever.
If you couldn't find this information on Apple's help forums... well, I don't know how to explain that, except to question your competence. It isn't at all difficult to find the information -- or to ask for it if you can't find the existing threads on the topic.
It has nothing to do with "competence" and I can assure you, I am very competent in troubleshooting Macs because the ones I've owned have needed my troubleshooting skills through the years, Gawd knows.
Boot Camp says that the iMac needs a firmware update in the read me. I am redirected to the site from a link within the readme. I download *2* fw updates that appeared around the same date. Try to install and, no go. The error message? "Your computer doesn't need these updates." Fine.
Start up Boot Camp assistant: "..can't run because firmware isn't up to date.".
So far, where the fsck does competence enter the picture? I follow links and instructions and do what is described therein.
Turns out that I had to be logged in as root which I needed to enable in netinfo asnd set a password. This was already done on my previous computer from which I migrated my user to the iMac. Obviously, this info didn't make it to the imacs that are supposed to just "work."
I run this computer as admin. My gripe with the fsckers at Apple and with the apologists in this ng is that a first time user/switcher would be pulling his hair trying to figure this out.
Firstly, Apple should have had a direct link to the download site and explained that the SMC fw upgrade wasn't necessary. Instead, we're presented with 2 updates that appeared a few days from each other. it should also have specified the reason it wouldn't install the firmware in the error message. "You need to be logged in as root" would have sufficed or even a terminal where you could sudo. But noooo, why make it easy for people?
Next time, please pay attention to to the post you're responding to. It can only lead me and others to question your ability to read for comprehension.
