You're wrong, as usual:

"What formats does Windows Media Player play?"

File type (format) File name extension CD
audio
.cda Intel Indeo video technology .ivf Audio
Interchange File Format(AIFF) .aif, .aifc, and .aiff
Windows Media audio and video files .asf, .asx, .wax, .wm,
.wma,.wmd, .wmv, .wvx,
.wmp, and .wmx Windows audio and video files .avi and
.wav Windows Media Player skins .wmz and .wms
Moving
Picture Experts Group (MPEG) .mpeg, .mpg, .m1v, .mp2, .mpa,.mpe,
.mp2v*, and
.mpv2 Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) .mid, .midi, and
.rmi AU (UNIX) .au and .snd MP3
.mp3 and .m3u DVD video .vob

No DiVX support. No 3ivx support. No XVID support. No H264 support. No
MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 support. No AAC support. No .ogg support. Just
Microsoft's own crap and a modicum of ubiquituous standards, such as
MIDI and CD audio. Hardly impressive.

You mean no built in support for those formats. I can tell you I can
play every format you named in WMP. Either WMP downloads the codec for you
or you install it. Not sure which ones that will be automatically downloaded
in the group you cite.

Besides, the user interface of WMP sucks ass.

Not to me. It could have more features but it's just fine for me. I
have found that very few media players have all the features packed into
one. For example. I use Total Recorder to listen to taped radio talk shows.
Total Recorder has a skip ahead feature that is truly great. You can program
the button to skip ahead any ammount of time you wish. 15 seconds is best
for skipping commercials on radio broadcasts. I have never seen this feature
on any other audio file player.

I heartily thank the gods for the arrival of Flip4Mac so I can export
all the videos I have in MS ASF etc. formats to a real format, such as
MPG.

WMP handles mpg.

So?

So it does out of the box.

John
