When this happened to the Compaq, it first happened out of the box, and
completely deleting the hardware from the device list and having Windows
reinstall it fixed it. The second time that didn't work, and we sent it in.
They said they fixed it by reinstalling Windows from scratch. This is the
third time. It went in for service, and they said they both reinstalled
Windows and put in a new motherboard, and they could not get it to work even
at the facility, so they sent her a new computer.
After many long sessions with phone support, I know the drill: reboot, try a
few things, reboot, remove hardware, reboot ... then reinstall Windows. As
this thing has none of her files on it yet, I might as well give it a shot.
And I'm familiar with Windows and routers enough (I was an early adopter of
wireless many years ago) that I'm pretty sure I have not missed any setting.
