"FireWire > > Apple > > ³strongly challenged² by USB in computer nd
peripherals markets, according to the In-Stat research firm.
However, it¹s showing signs of
life in consumer electronics (CE). Digital televisions, cable set
top
boxes, and DVD recorders are all driving FireWire growth in the CE
segment, the high-tech market research firm says. In addition, the
High-Definition Audio Video Networking Alliance (HANA) has endorsed
FireWire as a transmission medium for high-definition content, a
development that may spur adoption of FireWire in home video
networks."

FireWire not dead, but it's on life support Posted by Jason D.
O'Grady @ 5:41 am

I was genuinely surprised when Apple dropped FireWire sync from the
iPod nano. So much so that I almost returned mine when I first made
the gruesome discovery. I thought for sure that FireWire would live
forever in the bigger iPods and that it was just a casualty of the
nano's small size. Unfortunately, FireWire's almost dead completely.

I reported back in October, that when Apple launched the video iPod
sans FireWire, they also moved their FireWire Web page from a
prominent location on the top level of Apple.com to a sub-page in
the bowels of their developer Web site. Coincidence? You tell me.

Now I'm hearing that FireWire is gone completely from the new Intel
iBooks that are coming next month, but its loss should come as a
surprise to no one, given Apple's moves of late. A little birdy told
me that the new Intel PowerBooks will lose FireWire 400 completely
and retain only one FireWire 800 port as a concession to video
professionals.

What's your take on the death of FireWire? Will you miss it? Is this
a part of Apple's deal with the devil (*ahem* Intel)? Sound off in
the TalkBack comments below.

FireWire R.I.P.

Edwin, if you look at the top of the first article you referenced
(above the article title, written in orange), you will see that it is
dated December 8, 2005, as JIm and Alan stated. The 2nd reference (the
Mcelhearn.com article) is dated February, 2005. They are quite out of
date.

That's not old enough to be "quite out of date." Especially not amongst
you guys who will dig up a ten year old TCO study and wave it around as if
it proved the Mac has lower TCO today.

In another thread, one of you MacDummies tried to 'prove' Americans are
illiterate by citing a... wait for it... sixteen YEAR old study!

Oddly enough, this drew no protest from you...
