Well, i'm impressed about one thing. The ease with which SAMBA works on
Windows XP. Not so happy about getting WiFi to work on Windows though.
It's much more complicated and picky than it is on the Mac. With my Mac
laptop I simply click on the Airport icon in the menu bar, select
"other" (for a new network) type in the network name and the WEP code
(you need to enter it as a 26 character HEX code, though. Using the
actual password won't work), and you're up and running. With Windows, it
seems that only either 5 character or 13 character WEP passwords are
acceptable and even so, I could never get the Dell to see my network
even with a 5 character WEP password picked especially for it (the Mac
didn't care. Just type in the new WEP Hex code and you're up). However,
disabling WEP allowed the Dell to connect instantly. Don't know what the
problem is there. I'll investigate more, later.

UPDATE:

Seems that with my Linksys router, XP doesn't like the passkey word
either. It too wants a 26 character Hexadecimal WEP passkey. When I
deleted my network profile from the Dell, and started over with a new
one, this time using the 26 Character Hex passkey, it worked perfectly.
Don't know why.

But SAMBA worked well. I selected search for computers, found both my G5
Tower and my PowerBook instantly, selected the G5, typed in the
computer's name and password, and Voila! there was my desktop G5 Mac!
Moved the files I needed from the Dell to the Mac's public folder, and
disconnected. Couldn't have been easier!

But Windows is still flakey compared to Mac. Yesterday, at work, an
associate wanted to give me a new file. He put it in a folder inside the
general Marketing folder on the corporate server. I went to retrieve it
and the Dell laptop froze with the endless hourglass and a double
blurred image of the file's icon on the screen. Even after I bombed out
of that task, the ghostly image of the file remained in the background
of everything until I rebooted (the file wouldn't open from the server
either). I told my collegue about this and he took the file out of the
secondary folder and then moved it up a level to the general Marketing
folder, then I was able to copy it onto my my machine and open it. WEIRD!

Why are you spending so much time with this laptop George?

Josh

You're right, I'd just as soon take my PowerBook, but they have a
corporate policy that no computers other than company provided computers
can be connected to their network. So I use the "company provided" Dell
at work and transfer the files to my Mac to work on at home. That answer
your stupid question?

Sure they do George.
