I have a new client and the "gave" me a new Dell Latitude D510 today.
Gotta tell ya, I just have to laugh at Windows XP. I use it occasionally
on my Mac under VPC, but VPC isolates the user from a lot of Windows
crap. And even though I know Win98 pretty well, I have limited
experience with the underpinings of XP. So, today, I'm playing around
with my new Dell trying to set it up the way *I* like it. The first
thing I wanted to do was to lose that idiotic automatic click-and-drag
thingy with the touch pad. I hate touch pads anyway (even Apple's) and I
dont want it selecting stuff will-nilly as a move the cursor. So, I went
into the control panels and selected mouse. Not knowing what M$ called
this feature I just began turning stuff off that looked like it could
affect this annoying default action (well, to be fair, I don't know if
its default or not. The IT guy set the computer up for me. Maybe he
likes it this way). I selected disable button, I disabled tapping. I
disabled drag-lock. There, That should do it. Do you know that XP lets
you set up the track pad so that you can't select anything at all no
matter what you do, and you can't get back into the control panel
because nothing can be selected? Finally, I connected a USB mouse from
my Mac into the back and got everything back to normal. But like I said,
I gotta laugh. Windows is really stupid because it doesn't allow the
user to be stupid. More to come, I'm sure.
You're actually complaining because Windows did what you told it to?
You think that it should have some mind reading module that allows it
do what you actually want instead of what you tell it to? You're
getting whackier everyday, George!
You're being a little silly here, Mayor. It doesn't take mind reading
for the OS to know that the user almost certainly doesn't really want to
disable both the mouse button and touch pad clicking.
How is the OS supposed to know what you want? Aren't people smart
enough to handle that one on their own? There are many reasons for
shutting off the trackpad completely.
Which is why it's fine if the OS lets you do it... but it should confirm
it first, since there's a fairly good chance the user doesn't really
want that. Particularly if there's not another mouse plugged in, which
the OS also knows.
