I went to C: on Forsaken, and tried to share that one, and saw that it

I thought that maybe something was messed up and tried to "unshare"
it, and a dialog came up saying it had been shared for administrative
purposes, and if I disable it it will be re-enabled when "Server" is
restarted or the machine is restarted.

Correct.

Just create another share calling it C this time and it'll work fine.

Actually (as I said in my post), it didn't.

Yes, guess I missed it in amongst all your other problems.

You do need the same workgroup name and password, but otherwise it
should work.

Windows needs several minutes after rebooting (why reboot?) to see the
network. Pathetic, isn't it.

Or you could just ftp to <IP of Windows machine>/C

I could, but then I'd have to install a FTP server on the Windows
machine since it doesn't come with one to start with.

Does a bog-standard Windows 2000 installation include an FTP server
then, because smb://<IP of Windows machine>/c always works for me? Even
works with my ancient Windows 98 laptop. You do need to know the
username and password, of course.
