Here's a funny respons to the fact that an out of the box Tigerhttp://www.infurious.com/blogs/index.php/mj/2006/03/07/rm_my_mac_what_z

So you don't see any importance in the fact that the hackers had SSH
access
to the machine?
I have to say that I have seen no evidence that having SSH access was
the vector which enabled the compromise of the system. It's merely
speculation as we don't know much about it.
Josh
Yeah, it was odd how the attack vector was never made public by either
party.
I have a feeling it was either (a) it never happened at all, or (b)
someone
was to embarrassed to say the vector was the front door.
I'll say this. If you guys are so confident in OS X, do this. Get a
copy of OS X and install it clean on a Mac. Turn of automatic updates,
don't
use a firewall, router or anything but a direct connection to a modem,
DSL
or otherwise. Then challenge people to hack into it and attack it with
exploits and see what happens. Then you'll get what I'm talking about.
Go buy a new car and turn the stereo up full blast. Now... put access
to your life savings in the glove compartment, park it in front of the
local school with the keys in it, the motor running, the doors unlocked
and the 'Windows' rolled down.
Oh shit, what is it with these car analogies? Anyway that's what I've
been told is that OS X is out-of-the box just plain secure. Now I want
proof.
Back to reality: Shouldn't Windows be *better than* OSX at security?
I think any OS maker should strive to secure it. That means updates and
patches when they find something wrong. The question you're asking is
irrelevant. According to you guys since OS X is better, shouldn't it be more
popular? Shouldn't there be more software for OS X because it's supposedly
that much better?<wink wink, nudge nudge>
John
Of course not, and the proof keeps getting posted here every day.
There's always some idiot posting about how some Windows computer is
*cheaper* than a more expensive Mac configuration. A lot of people buy
on price. many more are simply not aware of Mac's superiority.
This is, of course, the real reason you object so vociferously to the
car analogy. A BMW is better than a Chevy, but people still buy more
Chevies.
