From what I see in the user manual, a Parallels linux virtual machine

That is a big turn off.

Is that a problem with Parallels or with Linux; IIRC Linux distros often
have trouble with wireless drivers.

Sounds like a Parallels problem to me. The virtual machine shouldn't even
know that wireless is involved, since all it should see is the virtual
network adaptor that Parallels creates.

I have installed:

Windows ME
Windows XP Pro
Ubuntu Linux

under Parallels Desktop on a Macbook.

All were able to connect using TCP via my wireless connection
(via the Parallels virtual ethernet port) immediately, without
any configuration on my part.

I really don't know or care about any "Windows host's wireless
connection" problems, as they aren't relevant to anyone running
Parallels on a *Mac*. I did see a few places in the PDF manual
where they had failed to edit out a mention of "Workstation" -
which is their Windows/Linux product. Maybe this is one of
them.

After a bit of trial and error, I was also able to get both
Street Atlas and the Lowrance GPS management software running
under XP/Parallels using a USB->serial adaptor to my GM100.
(the serial connection _is_ a bit balky at times, but it was
on real Wintel hardware as well, and Parallels allows you to
unplug/replug a USB device virtually, which will save some
wear-and-tear on my Mac's USB ports)

Macbook->OSX->Parallels->WinXP->Street Atlas->USB->serial->GPS

And it works!

This pretty much eliminates the last non-gaming reason for me
to own a (stand-alone) Windows PC. :-)

Parallels *is* cool.

How does it run, speedwise, compared to a comparable Winbox?
