He he John. Color management is a black art at the best of times. I
look after some of the business affairs of David Hamilton, almost
certainly the most popular and successful art photographer the world
has ever known. For example, i control his web site and I also have one
of my own.
I spend most of my days in Photoshop editing his or my pictures. I
never have much problem getting what I want on screen. But I sure went
through years of hell trying to get the printed output to look the same
as the screen.
I've read the books, set up the scanner (Nikon 5000), got the
calibration hardware (Gretag Macbeth), bought the profiles (Jon Cone),
installed the coolest monitors (Eizo) and printer (Epson 4800) but...
It's not enough to get all of this chain right. In a few weeks or
months I will buy a RIP and that, at long last, will deliver the
performance that careful calibration alone promises but cannot really
deliver.
If you're serious about this, take a look at Imageprint from Colorbyte
or Colorburst from Colorburst Systems. If you're not serious enough to
pay a four-figure sum for a RIP, at least ger serious enough to use
Photoshop. I have iPhoto somewhere on my hard drive but I've never even
launched it.
