I don't have any of it installed on my Windows systems. And I haven't
had any problem with malware. So I have to take issue with the claim
that it is needed.
There is simply no reasonable doubt that malware is a significant problem
with the Windows platform.
Irrelevant. For me those costs are not applicable. Therefore why would I
factor them in?
If you have some special situation where these are not applicable then so be
it.
Nothing special. Just general day to day computer usage like almost
everyone else.
For the strong, strong majority of Windows users it is true there is a
significant risk. I would love to know what your specific situation is that
allows you to not have the risk most XP users have.
Use a firewall and run with user level privileges unless I need to
perform administrative tasks.
In a managed environment, which is where the majority of studies have
been undertaken, this shouldn't be an issue. I provide consulting to two
small businesses and their systems have been up and running malware free
for years.
What anti-malware methods did you use?
Use a firewall and run with user level privileges unless I need to
perform administrative tasks.
When does Apple release security patches? Microsoft is releasing theirs
tomorrow. And they'll do so next month...assuming there are patches to
release.
Apple offers a schedule to the user. They produce updates as needed.
That's not a schedule.
With Windows users this became so often MS went to the schedule they did. Apple
has not had to do this yet, though they may some day.
They should.
Do you really need these things supported? Oh, and when you update the
system you often have to reboot. On a Mac such updates are simply not
*as* important.
That was the case. I routinely have to reboot OS X after updates.
Software Update lists the "Airport Extreme Drive Update" as requiring a
reboot.
This does not change the fact that on a Mac OS updates are generally not
as important. Malware makes a *big* impact to the Windows world.
Weren't we discussing the need to reboot after patch installation?
No. We are discussing the need to reboot the OS. There is a difference.
That's right. But you went off on a tangent talking about the importance
of updates.
In my experience needing to reboot Windows is a non-issue these days. I
can't recall the last time that I had to reboot Windows aside from the
occasional reboot due to software installation.
How do you explain the high level of reliability between studies and
between expert opinion?
Perhaps the expert opinions are biased too? However since we haven't
addressed a specific opinion all that is is speculation. Do you have a
particular expert opinion that you'd like me to review?
I must say, I find it bizarre to even consider that darn near all expert
opinions and all studies would not only be biased but be biased in the same
way. Do you have any reason to believe this is so?
Without something specific I cannot provide an answer. Is there a
specific expert opinion you'd like me to look at?
Why did you snip and not respond to the following:
Because it's not relevant since I've already demonstrated a potential
conflict of interest with the study from which you made that request.
We've been going round and round about "Mouse Precision" for days. It's
plain that you and I are in disagreement about it. Since I've already
discounted the study due to the conflict of interest I see no point in
addressing it anymore.

I also do not believe you have ever really described what form of
observations you were in reference to when you talked about the studies not
matching your observations. Did you mean mostly your own self analysis of
how you work? If so, what evidence do you have that this is more valid than
the studies and expert opinions mentioned?
