Daniel, are you under the impression that the RAM used in Macs is
different from the RAM other computers use?
It used to be. Back in the bad old days around the time of the
6400/6500 systems and clones.
Nowadays of course - and for many years - Macs use standard PC style
RAM. But Apple is still the most expensive place to get it.
In addition, Apple STILL controls the price of it's memory, while market
conditions alone control the price of PC memory. I was already aware that
large manufacturers such as Dell, HP, and Gateway also add a premium on the
price of the memory they sell. This is called "Free Enterprise", and "the
profit motive". I do not fault Apple for wanting to make a profit.
I admit, I was wrong about Apple as opposed to other manufacturers to a
point. I failed to do the necessary research, and spoke without knowledge,
and unfairly indicted Apple for being the only manufacturer to charge a
premium. However, I was NOT wrong about the HUGE premium Apple adds on to
the price of their memory, which they most probably get at the same or
similar prices as other system builders.
Market conditions probably control the price Apple pays for the memory at the
manufacturing plants, but they STILL charge HUGE premiums on the price of
this memory to its end users over what Wintel users would pay.
Put another way, Apple really JACKS UP the price for memory their end users
pay if they purchase their memory from Apple over the price they would pay if
the users purchased their memory from the manufacturers or resellers
themselves.
