Re: Apples newest commercials.

I just looked at Apples latest commercials at apple.com. I have been
quite intriqued with Apple as of lately, I just bought a new 20" imac
Core Duo, and I absolutely love it. I have also started reading the Mac
groups quite regularly. I think the Mac argument is a bit once sided,
as are the latest round of commercials.

For instance, the one for iLife, the PC guys says he is bundled with
'calculator' and 'clock', well what happened Windows Media Player,
which is a great player that burns CD's and plays most of the formats
out there. And what happened to Windows Movie Maker, which I have used
a lot, and with my limited experience with iMovie, thus far seems like
the superior product for editing movies. iPhoto, they didn't mention
that most of the basic image manipulation is contained within Windows
itself, including the ability to display folders contents as
thumbnails, which I havent been able to figure out how to do on my Mac
yet.

How about the restart one, I have had my Mac to three weeks, it has
downloaded updates twice thus far, both times required a restart, and I
had to force kill an application once (OK it was a Microsoft Office
application), but none the less, it doesn't seem to have an edge on
Windows here either.

Easier to use, that would be relative. If you are not a power user, I
would say so. If you are anywhere between power user and developer, I
am not so sure about that one. I think it depends on what you are used
to. I can see there being problems for people who are used to Windows,
and vica versa.

As for the slick new digital camera from Japan, I have never plugged a
camera into a Windows XP machine and not had it plug and play.

I think these ads are bordering on lies.

Now, do I think that the Mac is a superior product to most of the clone
PC's out there? yep! do I think OSX is superior to XP? Well maybe,
since I am a big fan of open source, yes. And I do think it is a bit
slicker and better looking. The jury is still out on stability as far
as I am concerned. Neither of my machines, the Mac and the Gateway PC
ever crash. I honestly think this thought is a hold over from the
Windows 95-Me days.

Now about the Virus' and Malware, this is a HUGE problem for Windows,
and a total pain in the ass for Windows users. I don't however thing it
is a design flaw with Windows, I think that most malicious programmers
write their programs to affect the largest user base. Period. If Mac
was in Windows position as the most popular OS, the table would be
turned.

Flame on!

Wow. Good post.

I love my Mac for a lot of reasons, but the fact is, Windows Movie Maker is really good, and the Media Center is nice, and the Media Player is good in Windows. No DVD codec built in is a major flaw in Windows (even XP Media Center Edition 2005). If you install Windows from the MS disc, and nothing else, and you have a DVD player, you cannot watch DVDs. That's pretty friggin bad. On the Mac, you have to pay extra, or get some third party product, to play QuickTime full screen. That is bad too.

I found the unkept slacker versus goofy corporate guy to be insulting. The Mac guy looked like he could not even afford a Mac. I realize he is supposed to look "creative" or something, but he looked like he should be delivering pizzas or at a Blockbuster register.

Windows does suck, IMHO, but mostly for simple things, not crashes. Like being able to right-click and look up a word definition or google a highlighted bit of text, and with an OS-wide spelling checker. I mean, you can't do squat in IE without plug-in/tool-bar/active-x junk shoved on top of it. But some things, like the task bar is way better then the stupid dock, are better in Windows.

But the little things, like anti-aliased edged windows with drop shadows, OpenGL stuff everywhere, Spotlight and such make using a mac enjoyable. Windows is not enjoyable, it is tolerable.
