I have an iMac G5 (2GHZ, PowerPC G5 (3.1) running
tiger 10.4.6. Sometimes when the computer goes to sleep and I try and
wake it up by pressing any key nothing happens and after a couple of
minutes the fans come on full blast - I am forced to shut it down

the power button and then restart.
A similiar problem happens sometimes when I restart
the mac, it just hangs at the black screen and no apple 'tone' is
heard
as with normal startup, the fans then come on full blast - I have to
then restart as with the above example.
These problems only happen sometimes but are frequent
enough to cause concern. I believe the problems might be linked to
USB
devices connected to the computer as on small scale testing it seems
the problems disappear when I unplug all USB devices except the
keyboard/mouse.
My current USB connections are keyboard/mouse, Nikon
Coolscan 5000ed scanner, epson photo r200 printer and canon powershot
usb cable. No firewire devices are installed but I am connecting to
the
net via an ethernet cable.

Any advice/input on these issues would be greatly
appreciated.


This problem has been addressed here before. The iMacs are known for
overheating problems - that is most likely the problem.

Not the latest ones tho. They're very quiet and don't dump heat like a
P4 does.


actually, they do run hot, more so than other laptops - plus, they're
very noisy - much more than other laptops. They make a high pitched
whining sound - .

This one is very quiet. The last of the Mohicans (sp?)
The earlier ones may have, but like always I get lucky now and then.
Now that Pentium D in that HP I tried out wasn't too bad, but it was
quite a bit more noisy than this G5, but when I first turned on the HP
the machine sounded like a turbine spinning up. They only do that the
first time around... beats me what HP had in mind.


It's good that you got a "good" one.


I did notice that Costco isn't moving those 20" iMac G5s. Another fellow
was returning one and I asked him how come? He said he found out that
Apple has moved to the Intels and he feels that the machine is already
obsolete! It is, unless IBM can port AIX UNIX to the G5s. Don't see why
not other than costs and support. :-))

The problem with all electronics is - they become obsolete real quick.
