"At the height of his powers, Jeanson James Ancheta felt unstoppable.
From his home in Downey, Calif., the then-19-year-old high school
dropout controlled thousands of compromised PCs, or "bots," that helped
him earn enough cash in 2004 and 2005 to drive a souped-up 1993 BMW and
spend $600 a week on new clothes and car parts.
He once bragged to a protégé that hacking Internet-connected PCs was
"easy, like slicing cheese," court records show."
Yeup. XP is real secure! NOT!
Wait a minute there Cloud. The Windiots here like slade say this doesn't
happen, is impossible, and more importantly, EASILY STOPPED.
When did I ever say this doesn't happen? I double dog dare you
to back that up. I must weigh pretty heavily on your mind that when
ever there is a case of a Windows box and someone posts it here, you
have to bring me up.
If people don't secure their computers, they will get attacked.
The reason there are so many Windows computers hacked is because
they're the ones that are out there in big numbers. Oh and it is easily
stopped. A simple firewall and anti-virus software can stop it. Most of
it gets on there through email and pirated warez. That same tactic can
be used on a Mac under OS X. They simply get the person to install a
piece of pirate software. In that software is the bot. Once again the
real idiot is the one who thinks that bots are spread because of
technology, most of it is social engineering.
People in the Mac community who tout OS X as some kind of invulnerable
super OS are doing current and future users a great disservice. The
last thing you want to tell the average joe computer user is, "go
ahead, be stupid, nobody can touch you behind your über OS." That'll
make the dip*** that much more likely to fall for an phishing attack
or some other form of online social engineering. Something happens when
mom and pop america get online that gives them a case of the raging
stupids.
The Mac users here don't say OS X is *invulnerable* stewie, they say
it's harder to infect which is why nothing's happened. No firewall+AV
software can stop every problem, esp the ones your AV wares don't know
about. The problem is that Windows is a vulnerable mess, even M$ says
that when malware hits, nuke the box and start over. If it were as easy
as you like to claim to avoid same, M$ wouldn't have said that.
