While trying to setup windows sharing between my sisters new minimac and her pc I found it easy to go from her mini to her old windows machine. However, I could not get the reverse working. System will prompt for password and username but does not authiticate. User posts show it is a bug in latest OS X which she has. I don't mind disabling passwords for a short basis as a work around, but wonder normally how long does it take apple to come out patches (or service packs, rpms, or whatever they call them in appleword).
Couple of things:
Try the IP with a C dollar, or use specific password and workgroup
smb://192.168.1.103/c$
smb://user:password@workgroup
Your Windows XP or Windows 2000 computer MUST have at least one shared folder; sharing only a hard drive is not adequate. If you do not have a shared folder (directory) then you will receive "original item cannot be found" error when you attempt to log in from a Mac.
In some cases you may need to delete the Windows Share and establish a new share if you can't see the contents of a drive.
Once done and if you still have connectivity problems, delete the cached information by using Go > Folder and then type /var and press Return. Then in the "automount" folder delete the folder called "Network".
Tim,
Wow!
I thought I'd seen 'every' treatment of the 'sharing' issue, but your last paragraph was new.
While all is working w/my G4 and xpee/2k and nine8 (and an external DVD burner is part of the sharing package) I think SharePoints made it happen.
SharePoints isn't complicated but do you know if?
1. SharePoints would "survive" zappiing my PRAM? It was suggested (here, if I recall) I do that as last ditch effort to solve my 'slower' bandwidthh problem.
The low down on the SharePoints is at <http://tinyurl.com/e1ie>
Just a guess is OK...I only provided the link if anyone had interest.
Plus, I recall I had difficulty sharing my second HD on the Mac without SharePoints.
Would your last paragraph (the new 'trick', to me) have any impact on making the second Mac disc available on the LAN or should that be/not be a problem in any case?
Thanks...I may go for broke & give your plan a shot because I my 'NETWORK' folders' on the newer, boot drive is more complicated (never ending subfolders unfold!?) than the original HD.
I'd prefer to not rely on a 3rd party app if your plan solves my prob w/not seeing the 2nd disc on the LAN.
Thanks... & no word from Fletch, you must have fixed him up...
Michael
