Yes I think you are on to someting as it did have a disk like
appearence. But it's not in the applications folder and it refuses to
let me move it over to it. I sure hope this is firefox/thunderbird
issue and not the mac as I don't have the time to work on her machine
everytime she needs somethign installed. If this is a mac issue, this
needes to be fixed as it shouldnt be this hard to install something as
basic as a browser. I am heading to the firefox site and see if I can
get any help. Thanks again to you and everyone that replied...

I've had the same problem (been awhile, I don't quite remember how, it
might have been with a fresh install). The problem is that Applications
is owned by root/admin. You can change the Applications folder
permissions from the command line with an admin password, or directly
from the Finder. Here's the command line version:

Open Applications/Utilities/Terminal, then type the following:

cd /
sudo chmod g+2 Applications

it will ask you for the admin password, and after you enter that you
will able to drag stuff into the folder.

From the Finder, select the Applications folder and hit Command-I (Get
Info from the File menu).

Expand the Details: tab under "Ownership & Permissions" at the bottom of
the info window. If you click on the lock icon, it should unlock and
allow you to modify the permissions. You will have to change the owner
first, and then you can change the access permissions. You can change
the ownership back to root again then, if you want.
