Actually, if you look at the predicted hardware requirements for Vista
(predicted because so far M$ has tried to keep them quiet) it is going
to require a significant upgrade. For example, the higher quality
graphics (DirectX 10...) require a circa 2006 video card. The RAM
requirement is a minimum of 1 GB. Vista can use all the processor power
you can throw at it, faster is better.
Result:
1) The cheap crap PCs with Intel Celerons can't run it. That cuts out
low income users and those who buy cheap boxes to use as servers, etc.
2) Bleeding edge users are going to:
A) Buy it after upgrading the hardware in their PC
OR
B) Buy it as part of a new qualifying PC.
3) Those who require a higher end PC will get it with the machine.
Example: Game fanatics, professionals.
Meanwhile, people who already have qualifying hardware will have
purchased or upgraded their machines circa 2006. Are they going to rush
to pay for an OS upgrade? Some will. Most won't bother.
Then consider the fact that the initial release of Vista has been
hobbled. It is missing a large proportion of its intended features. And
of course this is a '1.0' product that has been repeatedly delayed,
meaning that it will undoubtedly have a load of bugs. That sounds like
an incentive to wait for it to mature before purchasing.
I expect there to be an outcry by users for M$ to keep Windows XP on the
market longer than they intend so they can have an OS upgrade available
that will still work with their machine. This exact situation has
happened consistently with each new Windows release.
Equally I expect an outcry from people who either foolishly run out and
buy it, or who receive it as a gift. Once they figure out their machine
either can't run it, that it runs like a slug, or it is incapable of
running the latest games due to their hardware deficiencies, they are
going to be royally pissed off.
Conclusion: M$ have an uphill battle to sell Vista to anyone who does
not already receive it as part of a new computer.
Share and Enjoy,
