With all due respect Josh you may be in need of an ego realignment if you
consider your challenge issued in this ng is anywhere near as enticing as
a
competition to crack a Mac worldwide!

According to the Mac zealots it doesn't take much to crack a Windows
system.

I may have missed those claims!

Here's one from a couple of days ago courtesy of George:

"Yeah. It gets hacked in SECONDS."

http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.mac.advocacy/msg/188e114e7c196a53
?dmode=source

My Windows system has been online 86,400 seconds now and it remains
uncracked.

You are surprised to find hyperbole in use within CSMA?......really?

Therefore it doesn't have to be anywhere near as enticing.

If it's to be considered comparable it does!

Not if we're to believe that Windows is easier to crack than OS X.

What is not to believe? I have supplied an example from within our own ranks
of a person who thought very much as you do but was brought down to earth in
no uncertain terms!

"In spite of all the precautions I still had a hijack of my home page and
had my AV software turned off."-Tom Elam

According to you guys just putting it on the Internet is all it takes.

By 'you guys' are you including Windows users that have admitted being
compromised, or are you restricting that term for Mac users?

Anyone who has made that claim.

Would Tom have had the experience that he did have had he not been on the
internet?, in his case he most certainly was exploited simply because he put
his computer on the internet, I truly don't understand why stating the
obvious offends you so!

Yet here it is...sitting naked on the Internet just shy of 24 hours with
no issues.

As I said before offer your challenge using the same criteria as the one you
are comparing it to, it makes little sense to assume that such a small
target audience it that interested in your offer.

As far as I know it is being offered with similar criteria. If you feel
that it's not what do you think is different about it?

There is the problem! you have previously stated that comparisons are fine
with one proviso...

"Only if the two systems were configured identically."-Josh

You then offer your challenge a challenge where this criteria cannot be met
because as you state....

"The original "challenge" means nothing since we don't know the details.
We don't know what services the system had exposed nor do we know the
nature of the exploit used to gain root access."-Josh

So I fail to see how your challenge meets with your claim that...

"As far as I know it is being offered with similar criteria."-Josh

That simply cannot be an accurate assessment on your part!

As for the target
audience I am not assuming that it is small. I have not limited the
offer to any specific audience. It's open to all.

Open to all that happen to stumble upon it in CSMA? once again that does not
mirror the criteria of the test afforded Mac OS X.

[ snip ]

It's up for worldwide scrutiny.

Via CSMA?

Nope, I haven't limited my posting about it to CSMA.

Where else?

But if you're
concerned about the size of the audience please feel free to spread the
word. Here's the IP address for your convenience: 71.56.240.67

I was under the impression that YOU were attempting to set up a fair
comparison, my apologies if I misunderstood your intentions!

All are welcome to take the challenge.

I look forward to reading your challenge in forums comparable to the one
under discussion!

Josh
