We know.

I must live in a mansion, huh? After all, I didn't remodel my house
to get that to fit inside.

Do you remember writing this:

hh: "So your solution is to buy a bigger house rather than a smaller
PC. That really is amusing. "

Yes, I remember writing it; it was in context to your claims that if
someone didn't have enough room, then they didn't have an "office" (or
words to that effect). Of course, what this ignores is the fact that
many people really don't have an office at home...their PC is a small
desk tucked into a corner of the bedroom or some such.

hh: "Sure its a nice idea, but try to put it into effect: the reality
is that real estate costs real money. Locally, a single family home costs
around $175 per square foot. To widen a desk area by a foot takes
around 5 square feet total ... that's a quick $875, plus the annual
costs of property taxes, heating/cooling, maintenance etc. "

Bwa ha ha ha ha ha!!!

The home office that I built for myself was part of a larger addition,
so it only cost us $136/ft^2 as of when it was originally built.
Bringing that forward as a present value calcuation as per URL
http://www.westegg.com/inflation/infl.cgi it would be over $200/ft^2.

Now all you need is a reason why I'd pay more to get a Mac Mini, to get
less hardware, just because it's in a tiny box.

*I* don't need a reason for *you*.

Until we notice that Edwin is comparing a Refurb with a 90 day warranty
to a New with a 1 year warranty, and then wonder if it is worth making
much ado over the $10 difference.

What we see above is you lying through your teeth. My HP a1250n cost
me $850, brand spanking new, direct from HP.

Perhaps you did, but you can't buy it new from HP as of today.

Go see yourself: go to
http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/home.do and typed in
"a1250n" in the search box. The only returned hit I got *today* was
for a Refurb.

If it exists elsewhere on their website as new, you'll have to provide
the full URL.

Joe Ragosta is the guy who compared refurbished Mac Minis against new
PCs, with nary a complaint about that from you or any other Mac
Advocate.

For comparsions by Joe, you'll have to provide some specific examples.
I *do* recall discussion on the general inadequacies of the 1G mini
shipping with only 256M RAM, though...

Small PCs have existed before the Mac MIni was introduced.

True. Unfortunately, they don't tend to be all that successful in the
PC marketplace,

I've lots of them in offices I've visited.

We have some of them in our office, but simply not that many of them;
less than 10%, and probably closer to 5%.

perhaps because of its commodity-based modularity.

It's that most people won't pay more just for the sake of having small
box. Regular size desktops either fit, or they use a laptop computer.

Yes, that's the general choice...but we've both said that we've seen
exceptions to it. So what?

Small is important where portable operation is the goal.

That may be generally synonymous, but it is not exclusively so. For
example, one of the places that I more frequently see small-footprint
PC's is on a secretarial desk, which makes sense since they often have
to make room for their own dedicated printer too, which eats up desktop
real estate.
