Same for the Mac, if the product is anywhere near what you might call
"recent". I've plugged in all sorts of cameras, scanners, hard drives, and
whatever, and the darned things always just seem to work. The only drivers I
ever install are printer drivers for very recent printers.

The CD for Windows, however, installs all sorts of crap, including most every
time one or more applications. A camera, for instance, most likely won't
work just plugged in straight-away, so you have to install the drivers. Then
you are also blessed with some additional application to get the photos off
the camera, and a separate photo manager, which may install hooks elsewhere,
and both of them litter the Start menu and Desktop with icons.

Cameras I plug in to the Mac mount like a disk volume, right there in the
Finder, where I can drag the photos around as I see fit.

When someone in my my Windows-based corporate customer brought in a very
expensive Nikon video camera into the office, no one could get the files off
the camera. IT said they would be up in a day or two to install the drivers,
so I plugged the cable into my Mac, it mounted as a volume, and we edited the
video on my Mac.
