Actually, it usually works the same way on Windows. They only have to
install those drivers and things (in most cases) if they want *extra*
functions. Extra functions might include things like programmable
macros that can be assigned to buttons on the device, or extra
adjustments beyond whatever is standard for all devices of that type.
