In my experience, once you start having problems like those described
above the OS will become increasingly unstable until a reinstall is
performed. Of course it is possible that with my being new to OS X
there are other steps I could take besides reinstalling, but when all
else fails it is a viable solution. Only takes about an hour to run.

Thank you for referring this... I have been looking for some automated
way to run those utilities without using the Terminal.
