My favorite way to deal with this *very* common and frustrating problem
is to name photos with their exif data.
Drag and drop freeware exists for this on OS X at:

I don't know of any cameras that do this, but they really should. It's
a great way to never have duplicate file names for photos (unless
pictures were taken from different cameras at the same second) and the
file name tells you something useful about the picture without any user
input whatsoever.
