How much higher? Apple's 10Q only says that software has higher GM.

But since hardware sales outweigh software sales by 9:1, there's no
way for the software sales to be high enough to make up for losing the
hardware
why do you think there's "no way" for the software sales to be high enough
to make up for losing sales on hardware? do you think people would not pay
for os x over windows if they could do it on their current hardware? and
these things feed on themselves as well- if you have more os x sales, you're
going to have more sales from iwork, .mac, ilife upgrades, etc.
If I were in charge of Apple I would not bet on people buying enough copies
of OS X to make up for lost hardware sales - at least not now. Maybe if OS
X gains significant market share.
OSX will NEVER gain "significant market share" as long as it is tied to the expensive hardware currently associated with it. Corporations simply can't afford the purchase of millions of machines just to use a better OS, I assure you. IT managers are NOT in charge when it comes to cash outlays. The Accountants are the ones in charge. And they would rather pay $200 for a site license for Windows rather than pay an extra $1000 for an "Apple" machine (remember, corporations don't buy ONE machine at a time, like home users, they buy THOUSANDS) even tho the OS is so much cheaper and more elegant than Windows.

Even home users, when faced with a choice between a $600 Dell with XP Home Edition, and $1800+ for an "Apple" machine with OSX, almost ALWAYS choose the $600 Dell, even tho the "Apple" platform is so much more beautiful. Beauty never even enters into the equation (or maybe it does in their heart-of-hearts), but I guarantee you, the size of the outlay in cash or credit will ALWAYS outweigh the beauty of an Apple machine for most home users and corporate IT executives.

You've negated, or should I say not understood the factors that influence purchase of a PC.

Folks buy a PC based on several things:

Cost
Processor speed
what they have at work
what games they want to run

Beauty has little to do with the reason why any PC user buys a PC.
That's exactly what I've said. I'm sorry you have such poor understanding of the English language to miss it.

The fact is, a Wintel machine with EQUAL or BETTER processor speed will be at LEAST $1000 cheaper than a similarly-equipped G5.

No kidding? So they're going to give me $500 to take a free Wintel machine instead of paying $500 for a Mini? Wow. I missed that.

For the sarcasm impaired, how is a Wintel machine $1000 cheaper than a $500 Mini?

Also, that "machine they have at work" is almost ALWAYS a $699 Dell, NOT a $1500+ G5.

Nice obfuscation. Why aren't you comparing comparable machines? Apple's Mini is a much better match for that cheap Dell for the average corporate use.

A MATCH? Good God, man! Get a hold of yourself! You're going off the deep end now.

Then WHY aren't the corporations buying those $499 MacMinis, instead of the $699 Dells by the truckload? To set the matter straight, those $699 Dells can be EXPANDED if necessary, while those $499 MacMinis can't. I will admit that those MacMinis are "cheaper", but I will NOT agree with you that they are "better in quality or upgradeability, something those IT execs look for in a machine when making purchasing decisions.,

Put a MacMini on the CEO's desk? The CEO would laugh that IT exec to scorn at such an idea! And then call Human Resources and have him replaced within the hour with someone who knows computers.

For professional graphics use where the PowerMac makes sense, you're not going to be using a $699 Dell.

I will say the same thing to YOU that YOU said to me: "Why compare apples to oranges?" You and I both know there is NO $699 Dell which can compare with a $2700 (or more) PowerMac G5. And so does that IT exec. But his budgetary constraints will not allow him to put a $2700 PowerMac G5 on his secretary's desk. Maybe on his desk, and the CEO's desk, but not Suzie's-from-the-secretarial-pool.

When professional graphics are in the equation, very few companies purchase $699 Dells to do the work. They buy SGI graphics workstations, or mini-mainframes, or yes, PowerMac G5s. However, more and more are buying $3000 PC clones outfitted for top-of-the-line graphics production instead of PowerMac G5s (even i fit were $500 lower in cost). After all, Pixar software will run JUST AS WELL on a properly-equipped PC clone as on a similarly-equipped PowerMac G5. And MUCH lower in cost.
